Photos from Afghanistan

Since Afghanistan isn’t front and center in the MSM or the campaigns at the moment: a reminder of the Americans and Afghans for whom it is daily reality. These pictures were taken several years ago — in 2005 and 2006 — but could be from yesterday. The photographer is violinsoldier who, yes, played his violin in Afghanistan during his deployment there. He lives in Kansas City, MO.

We liked the way this shot places you inside the Humvee, the (local?) scarf around the soldier’s neck, and the peaks behind him.

Things are calm, the light is soft, but the concertina wire doesn’t let you forget the war.

Violinsoldier’s caption for this one is “Afghan boys checking us out”; their expressions hint at the cultural divide.

A nice shot that gives a sense of place without much of an American filter; you could imagine it having been taken by an Afghan. The vastness of the landscape also suggests the scale of the job facing the Afghan security forces.
